Our Fair Trade Knits collection is made from the finest Alpaca and organic Tanguis Cotton blends. Yarn spun from the alpaca, a member of the camel family native to the Andes in South America. The yarn is soft, lustrous, and highly insulating. Unlike sheep’s wool it’s lanolin-free, making it hypoallergenic. Peru is home to 75% of the world’s total Alpaca population, and provides the main means of sustenance for thousands of families in the High Andes. Alpaca ranching has a relatively low environmental impact.
The cotton used in our sweaters and knits is Peruvian Tanguis & Pima Cotton, an exceptionally soft cotton known for its durability and strength. These varieties also require less water for growing, and can be harvested up to six times per year. Organic cotton farming supports Free Trade and ethical practices, benefiting local economies and skilled agricultural workers.
Care: Alpaca is naturally antimicrobial, and does not require frequent washing. The alpaca fiber is odor-resistant, stain-resistant, and anti-bacterial. When needed, hand washing is always the best and safest method for washing both cotton and alpaca. Using cool water and gentle detergent submerge the item and gently agitate the water with your hands to evenly distribute the soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes, and rinse with cool water until no longer soapy. Do not wring, instead press the water out of the item and lay flat to dry.
